As work trickles storms in, we discussed abt the conflict of other work needing attn. "有什么事，我扛~" If it's anybody else, I would think wa, real or act superhero?! I looked at W, and I believed him.
As an excellent boss, he took the opportunity to mentor me. That I can manage the work myself. W drew that oh-so-familiar priority/value/"time mgt" matrix.
Background:
There are four types of tasks, Impt/Urgent. Impt/Not urgent. Not impt/Urgent. Not impt/Not urgent.
Ppl start getting stress when the impt thgs become urgent (read: impending deadlines) and we oftentimes spend too much times on this. It recommended that ~60% of our time/effort should be spent on what's impt but not yet urgent. Idea: Plan and prepare. Spend abt ~25%(?? cannot rem...) on what's impt and urgent, 10% on what's not impt but urgent and 5% on what's not impt and not urgent. Always buffer time for emergencies (read: sai kang) and quiet/personal time/summaries.
The matrix shown is an exact replica of what my boss drew. To remind me that to deliver the report by 31/3, the results hv to be out by 31/1. His next question was what month we are in now. I bet he went for some influencing/negotiation/push ur subordinates class! PoWow.
Honestly very lost. I don't even know what are the scenarios, how to give results... Then I realise my senior has been very kind to me... He must hv taken all the job upon himself...
I look at the model, think of my tasks, and the remaining time to the deliverable. This model is the one that has served me well since I first read abt it in sec/jc allright. Now a familiar stranger. I suddenly dunno how I can use it... cos while urgency is obvious, what's impt becomes very grey. Impt to me, boss1, lab head, company, or the country? hmms. maybe not the country so exaggerating. by definition, impt thgs help u to achieve ur own goals. HMMS.
Searching deep down, I somehow know what's impt at this moment... The approved proj vs the upcoming big proj. It's a tough call, boss says I should judge the priority myself. I chose but I still end up doing the other work at OT tonight. Cui max. YM encouraged me that he is also learning priority even at this point. It's qutie amazing cos I don't think boss and YM communicated abt this... shows that everyone is really overloaded and prioritising is the #1 Task over all the other tasks this season.
Admidst all that waterfall, there is a glimpse of rainbow as light shines in. I've learnt "Book 20 Science Park Drive #Entrance" to 71222 to book a cab via sms. Trivial. Haha. Thankful for YM to wait for me to leave :):) Thankful that I've made a sis at work... Ching Ching Jie! Haha. At first I scared she think I childish... but now she also call me xiao meimei already... hahah. working relationship with her is enjoyable :):)
Also heard a glimpse of insider talk and realised what I've been shielded from. Due to sensitivity, I can't say it here so nobody will know. Haha. But God knows. And He has probably helped me to make the best decision in May and Aug 2009. Amazing grace.
