Let's go~!

Prelude
===
Jetstar is investing so heavily in its 5yr anniversary promo ads, i am seeing Joanne Peh everyday, she goes with me to school, she goes with me back home, i see her even when i'm resting at home. She looks so happy in all the ads, and i'm sure fellow tv addicts are familiar with her "awwww.... i want one..." declaration of fancy for pandas on a zoo(?) tram. while i've rationally determined that it's just a very well-placed marketing tagline, there's a part of me that is telling the other part of me, "let's go~!"

***
yixin's 2 criteria of worthwhile travel:
1. u dun get it in singapore, like the alps of switz or 12 apostles - i nv imagined them to be so big! really must be there to be amazed!
2. it's with/for marvellous ppl

constrained by:
1. the traveling doesn't cause inconvenience or harm to other ppl... eg late nights for colleagues
2. amt of money spent satifies value for money condition and doesn't prick conscience

Criterion 1 excludes lame buildings that looks the same on every tourist's photo, eg merlion or tower of pisa. Criterion 2 may possibly overwrite criteria 1 and constrain 2. You would also have noticed that Constrain 2 is highly subjective. Don't i have a wonderful decision making model? LOL.

below are the ramblings of events and thots related to going somewhere out there.

all that jetstar ads and jane's spur on fb to get out of singapore got me searching and researching for bintan, batam, tioman, kuching for new year's eve countdown.

unfortunately, the research has led me to conclude that it is terribly unwise to travel in peak seasons. i've learnt in econs that the market self-adjusts to reach equilibrium btn selling price and buying price to cope with supply and demand. BUT DOUBLE OF USUAL PRICE??? looks like demand is really really high at new year's eve. FAIL CONSTRAIN 2. sadssss. then i wonder, is there someone somewhere out there who is actually thinking of coming to singapore (sentosa...) for 2010 countdown? i didn't hesitate to agree with myself.

i pondered abt what's the point of gg overseas to countdown when other ppl are coming right here to countdown. i've come to conclude that it's really not so much of countdowning somewhere, but it's more of just continuing the tradition of crossing over to the new year with my dearest friends. so, it really doesn't matter where. it must have been the trap of being gainfully employed and earning money that i start thinking of going here n going there and forgetting that it's the ppl that are really impt.

side conclusion: i have an enmity with money. the moment it comes to me, i have surges of urges to get rid of it.

while researching, i also think of weizi mentioning how penang's countdown is really nice, and i do want to go there and see see, but i think that will be quite meaningless. unless i get to try weizi's grandma's laksa at the same time! *slurps* just that i also think of the 2004 tsunami and am really scared that a tsunami strikes when i'm there... scared scared. die for the sake of counting down somewhere anywhere? aiyos. dun want... think i'm also partly influenced by peter who just wants to stay in the SAFE singapore~very unadventurous hor..? :/

so it's chalet for countdown this year. which chalet still undecided... so sad that daryl couldn't get the nice nice changi chalet this year! sobs. still, i'm sure we'll have an enjoyable countdown :)

an incident ytd while on my way to singapore flyer to collect my nike race pack to confirm me that this world is made up of ppl who visit each other's countries and look at the lame landmarks each other have made.

i met a couple from Pune, India who asked "how do i get to merlion park?"

Frankly, i do not even know that there's a place in singapore called merlion park so i asked if they're looking for the merlion.

D'oh!

As though playing a tour guide, I recommended them to walk over to the esplanade side for a good photo point. After i said it, i felt really silly... they'll just get the same photos as everybody else. i stopped myself from recommending them to take the photo where they can be "drinking water" from the merlion's spout.

Hence the exclusion for criterion 1.

i think of the times of travels, eiffel tower, louvre, london eye, monte carlo casino, st mark's square, skansen, zaans schans/kinderdijk, .... and the "standard" pushing the leaning tower of pisa pose. LOL. bet everybody who's been there did that RIGHT? suddenly feel travelling is very meaningless if it's just to see all these manmade landmarks (perhaps less the windmills, which to this point still amazes me) BUT just to justify all my spending... i think all the travels have taught me one very impt lesson: the beauty and splendour of man's works and architecture (sagrada familia, gosh) can never ever match up to the perfectness of sunrise/sunset, the height and width of mountain ranges (heidiland!) the auroras (though just a glimpse, it was aweeeeeeeesome)... basically buildings/sculptures vs nature, man vs God, we lose big time. big big time.

go see the photos by urself and friends again, the really beautiful pictures (that are "liked") either have super nice sky (made by God) or super nice scenery (made by God) or nice candid moments of people (also made by God). hmm think the latest photo that i've liked is by yuenling, of a bunch of ppl playing beach volleyball and enjoying california's sun.sky.sea.sand.

talking abt california, so glad for yuenling that she's got this great chance to enjoy it for 9 months. i wonder if i can even get to spend 2 weeks there... but i'm sure if i'm there, i won't be there there per se, but will be zooming to other places like grand canyon and LA also. if it coincides with biaoge's commencement, will prob go over to stanford as well. rather than just enjoying the life there... which i really want to!!! money is another issue. flying there is not cheap... tho er yi recently recommended chinese eastern and eva which features return tickets just slightly over 1k! so unsettled.

among all the unsettleds, there's one belief i hold towards travelling. it doesn't matter where we go, as long as we're blessed by nice weather - nice sunshine warmth, nice blue sky, nice clouds. nice friends! :) anywhere will do.

talking so much abt nice... makes me kinda miss Nice, France! Hahaha... Go see the beauty of Nice captured in photos and more photos here!

now for the slap myself moment. LOL. i know u've been waiting for this. Why i say criteria 2 can possibly overwrite criteria 1 and constrain 2:

next confirmed trip is shopping at taiwan 2010! as in the ppl are confirmed, me and hai. just 2 of us... cos shopping... less ppl better :D the purpose is confirmed, but the dates actually not confirmed. the purpose is very dumb right. i promise i won't anyhow spend! it's more like fulfilling a dream of hai and myself. we've made a pact (?) to go shopping at taiwan tog once we both start working (i.e. have spending power). but of cos she started working first, and she's been waiting for me for 3 years, going on to 4 years alr! when i started working, i realised the typhoon at taiwan is really bad... and decided to monitor the weather for a year before choosing the best time to go there! i hate bad weathers. rem sihui said in march it's pretty cold and rainy, peter didnt' get to see the sunrise in alishan in may cos it was raining, august got typhoon, oct is raining, againzzz. bleahs. taiwan looks like a very bad destination... but... we really do want to go there to shop and eat the MEGA SAUSAGES!!! LOL.

allow myself this one last indulgence :D

snippet of convo with couple from Pune:

they: singapore is very clean and there are no crowds
me: if you come out tomorrow or sunday, there'll be lots of crowds
they: in pune, no need saturday or sunday, everyday also crowd (translated to singlish by yours truly)
me: i saw pictures of everyone packing onto buses, is that it?
they: yea, hanging out of the buses too! *laughs*

perhaps i shud stop complaining abt the crowds in mrts and buses.

BUT ppl shud really move to the back of the buses. i've lost count of the number of empty-at-the-back buses that didn't stop bcos there was miraculously "no room" to move up the bus.
